machine work kills, that is where it gets expendsive if you plan on doing alot of things right. there are also alot of machining steps you can take for your motor.

like to name a few

hot tank head and block
hone block
bore block (if needed)
deck block
knife edge crankshaft
line bore block journals if needed
Micoropolish crankshaft
resurface ie: head,flywheel ect

there is ALOT of things that can be done to get your motor just right, not ALL are need some are a must when rebuilding a motor some arent. but machine work can run you a good ammount of money.

so can assembly and with honda motors assembly is something that needs to be done to the slight precision or else everything wont work correctly and you will find yourself doing it all over again just some thoughts

When I got my motor work done on my d16z6 this is what I got done....

Head:
Resurfaced and hot tanked
new valves
port and polish
3 angle valve job
assembly
$650

Bottom end:
Decked
block notched for rods
bored .20 over
cleaned
crank balanced and micropolished
stock flywheel resurfaced
assembly
$455

This was at a local shop but as you can see the head was more than my complete rebuild of the bottom end. Just to give you an idea of what I was charged. THis place charges $50 for flywheel resurface, $20 per cylinder boring, $120 assembly.

it will be much cheaper for you to buy a low mileage used B18 vs rebuilding unless you do it yourself.
