Rear Main Seal replacement????
Hi, My Honda Accord 2002 is in the shop and having the transmission replaced, the dealer recommended that I also replace the rear main seal even though its not leaking. The cost would be $80 more, do any of you think this is needed or just good idea? Thanks
I'd do it, you're not paying anymore labor, although it sounds like a little spendy for a main seal, you should buy the seal online or something
yes, have it done. how much is the labor on your transmission replacement? thats how much it will cost you to get that seal replaced later, and you'll still have to pay the $80. i don't now why these engines are so proned to it, but it seems every H and F engine likes to blow the rear main early. on my B20 it had over 200K on the original rear main
Thanks for all your replies. I will go ahead and replace it. The seal itself is only $15 the rest is labor. You would think since the trannie is already out they would not charge any more labor, but I'm dealing with a dealership.
It does take some time, [not a lot] to properly replace the seal, $80 now will save you 100s later. 94

80 dollars is crazy the seal is only a few bucks and takes a few min to knock it out and tap new one back in at my shop any time we do tranny work we do rear main seal for free unless it is a 2 piece then we charge parts and labor
So at your shop you didn't factor in the price of the seal and the few min. it takes to replace it in the price for the work on the tranny so you could "include it for free"?94
thats a $17 dollar seal from honda...sounds like they are getting an extra half hour labor for it as well. which is EXACTLY what i do them for when someone is getting a transmission. though i only recommend them if they are leaking....

If its a manual the rear main seal will leak oil onto the clutch and make it slip. It ruined a brand new clutch this way. It also leaks oil over night, regardless if its auto or manual. This is with my 91 civic, with 110,000.
