Default rear disc brake changing

My friend changed her rear disc brakes the other day. it was on a 2002 ford mustang. she had to use a special cube key tool to crank back the piston. I have never heard of it before, just wondering if its standard for all rear disc brakes, or if its only on the fords. they tried to use a c clamp, but was unsuccessful.

thanks,

Hondas are like that too. You have to twist the piston to retract it into the cylinder. That's the handbrake auto-adjusting mechanism. Sometimes if you get too excited trying the C-clamp, you damage the mechanism & get to buy a new caliper.

On some other cars the handbrake is a small drum brake inside the middle of the rotor.
