I had a rubbing noise on the rear calipers. I discovered the noise coming from a thin metal backing that rest against the back of the calipers and the pads. It was rubbing against the rotor. Bent it trying to correct the problem but no luck. I ended up removing it.

Should I be advised not to remove this? What's it's purpose?
