Default This REALLY sucks! The seal on the oil filter split!

I was doing an oil change today on my accord using a fram filter. when i put the filter on the car, i noticed the filter kept turning. it seemed pretty tight though. however, when i turned the car on, i was expecting something to go wrong....and it did. within seconds, i heard a pppfffff and then liquid spashing out underneath the car. i turned it off immediately to find 41/2 quarts in my driveway.

i guess the seal was split. i had the filter in my garage for about 2 months. i wonder if the cold air split the rubber. hope the cars' alright tommorow when i restart it after fixing it.

I had something similar happen to me before. When I changed the oil filter, the old rubber gasket was stuck on the block. I didn't notice it and assumed it came off with the filter. So I proceeded to put the new one on, and therefore stacked two seals together. Oil sprayed all over the garage. Cleaning that mess up was the worst sh*t ever. I can't even begin to imagine cleaning those beaches after the Exxon spill.

Same here, but it was because it was the wrong filter...

This is one reason I use Honda OEM oil filters. It is impossible for the ring to break or stick to the block. A few months ago I went to the dealer and they give me a filter for free. SOME of the guys who work at the dealership are very cool (good peeps). Others, well you know are f#cktards.

I'm not sure if this had anything to do people's filter seals sticking to the block, but it's good practice to lube up the new filter seal with oil prior to installing it. I usually get a good amount and rub it into the seal and also around all the threads before I put it on. Once I feel the filter touch the block, just another 1/2 turn and done.

Just throwing that out.

I've gotten into the habit of wiping off the surface where the filter gasket seats. That way I can't miss it if the old gasket were stuck there.

Really make sure to rub some oil on that seal as well, this will prevent binding...

I'd be reluctant to criticize Fram without any evidence, but I've seen Fram filters do this too. There's either no glue or very little glue between the metal filter body and the rubber seal. The seal sticks to the engine block better than it sticks to the filter itself. I've done the same thing you did... fresh oil change leaked oil everywhere. I've stopped buying any Fram filters...

it is true not all oil filters are the same..........hastings and amsoil are the best..........fram is one the worst

it is always good practice to wipe off the oil filter mounting surface before installing a new filter.......also check the old oil filter when you remove it to see if the gasket is still attached

Same thing happened w/ my car, except the Mobil station did it and it cost them over $8,000 since my engine was fried (didn't blow open until I was doing 50 mph in 3rd gear). I know I'll never make that mistake now.

I have never seen any o rings stick to the block besides a fram. I recently cut ter and a toyota filter at work and the diffence is pretty big try cutting open a couple of new filters and looking at the the mopar ones are the worst design I have ever seen

damn, didn't anyone ever say anything to you about that before you started changing your own oil? the first thing my old man told me when he taught me to change oil when i was like 8 was to check the block for the gasket or just look at the filter aftr you take it off. not to talk ****, just sayin its the first thing i heard about it.

i've heard of the gasket sticking to the block before, and then double stacking the gaskets accidentally which causes a leaking of oil. it can be really bad when all that oil is pressurized and finds the holes.

i normally make it a point to clean the block filter surface after taking the old oil filter off. also i apply some clean oil to the new oil filter gasket/seal. i've never had any problems with leaks or gaskets gettng stuck, even with the Fram oil filters. i've used Fram filters quite often without any problems whatsoever.
i'm not saying that Fram makes great filters or that they are as good as or better than the OEM filters, just that i've used them and they work fine for me. i'm not sure of the flow characteristics between the Fram Tough Guard or Double Guard and the Honda ones. i never disected them to compare the possible differences.
i use the Fram cause i usually get them discounted through my friend, couple $ each for the good ones.
