Radiator seams split, why?
94 LS w/ OEM-style radiator (aluminum core, plastic tanks). The tanks did not crack as one would expect. Instead, the seam where the tank is attached to the core split open. Seems like it would have to be some sort of excessive pressure situation to cause that kind of failure, right?
I flushed the system and replaced both the thermostat and water pump a little over a month ago. I have now replaced the radiator and cap, but obviously I don't want the radiator to fail again due to the same problem.
So the question is: what would cause excessive pressure to build up in the radiator? What should I check to make sure this doesn't happen again?

i'm not really sure why it happens but the exact same thing your talking about happened on my firend's 95 Intrgra GSR, replace it as soon as possible because the endtank eventually blew off as we were driving
edit: oh you already replaced it, one thing you can do to prevent it is to make sure your heat is not recurculating

That's the only thing I could think of, too. The cap looked fine, though, nothing obviously stuck together or anything like that. I talked to a mechanic this morning and he said the cap was about the only thing that would mess up the pressure. Guess I'll just keep an eye on it for now.

50/50. No, it definitely didn't freeze (see location).

ive had a similar experience with my friend's jdm b16a w/ gsr rad. after driving for more than five minutes, his car would overheat and his radiator hose would blow off. turns out he dented his exhaust and it was creating excessive backpressure, got new piping and fixed the overheating prob. hope this helps in some way
