Quick>>diagnose my timing belt problem--sways side to side and...
ok heres the problem on my 95 jdm h22a:
Part 1--
belt moves side to side on the cam gears, maybe 1/8" each way, it just kinda sways and is getting tiny chips taken out of the side of it in the same place in 2 places on the belt. damage so far is minimal. im not worried it will break because of the tiny chips, but just noticing that is is worn down a bit.
Part 2--
the belt also seems looser on the exhaust cam side. when i hold the rpms at 3k then the belt shakes badly from the front to back. when i get above that then it is steady and doesn't shake at all. the car idles smoothly also. i am changing the belt tomorrow in hopes that it will fix the problem.
could this be a bad auto tensioner?, stretched belt?, could the belt be off one tooth?
ANY ideas or comments would be helpful on this..i need answers asap if possible, thanks in advance

Sounds like a number of problems. The belt is probably not properly tensioned or it is just slap woreout (redneck axcent). Replace the belt and tension it properly.

exhaust side will be looser. rule of thumb is about 1" of deflection from cam to crank. you can push on the tensioner with your hand while someone else tightens the bolt if you want to make it tighter than the tensioner spring.
thanks for the replys.
can anybody else offer anymore info on this? any ideas will be helpful. if it could be the auto tensioner then i will need to but one before i do it tomorrow night.
can anybody explain the side to side movement?
i need as much info on this problem as i can get before i start. thanks

i watched my friend's crx timing belt move back and forth on the cam gear. It was because his belt was too loose.

If i'm not mistaken, the h22 you have has a hydraulic tensioner on the timing belt. Todd's (KMS Luder - Prelude forum moderator) once had a problem with his tensioner which resulted in the same symptoms which you are experiencing. Trying posting this message in the prelude forum, you'll get a better response.
well,
im going to go change it right now so thanks for the help. funny thing, i did post it in the prelude forum and got 0 replys. oh well here goes nothing,........any other comments are welcome.....
