Questions about my car...
Hey whats up? I am a new member here. I check these boards out quite often and figured I might as well join. I drive a 99 Si that is basically stock. Only mods are H&R sports, KYB AGX adj., Bridestone S-03s, and a Progress camber kit.
My valves are starting to click and I am planning on taking it in to get them adjusted. I have 42000 miles on my car now. How much should it cost to have this done?
Are there any other scheduled maintenance items I should have done while its in? I change my own oil, but is there anything else like tranny fluid, etc. that I should have them replace at my mileage?
My car will sometimes act like it doesnt want to go into first gear. Any ideas on what this may be? Also, going into the other gears doesnt seem as smooth as it used to. Any ideas on what is causing this and how can I fix it?
I am also getting a vibration when I brake from ~60mph in the steering wheel (only when I brake around this speed or higher but stops once I get below 60 mph). I just had an alignment done, so I dont think it is that. I am thinking possibly the rotors, but that doesnt really seem likely. Any ideas?
Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to get that steering wheel colum looked into. My friends did tht and he evetually lost control of the car one day. It got owned by the metal cables in the median. You should also get the transmission checked/clutch.
You will probably get some more help, but I hopeI helped a little.

#1... Make a few calls to dealers and independent Honda specialty shops for prices in your area.

#2....You should have received an owner's manual with your car. All the maintenance schedules are listed in it.

#3... Might need clutch adjustment. However, 1st gear is normally difficult to get into since there are no synchros associated with it.

#4...It's very important that you use a torque wrench on the lug nuts when re-installing the wheels. Torque should be 80lb/ft. Impact wrenches will warp the rotors every time. You could wait until you need new front pads, then have the rotors resurfaced at that time. This should cure the shake.
Thanks for any suggestions.
You're welcome.

Ok, I called the dealer today. They said $60 for the valve adjustment.
Impact wrenches will warp the rotors?? What is involved on the clutch adjustment?

Clutch isnt adjustable on that car. Have the dealer change the tranny fluid while your there. A low fluid level will make a hard to shift symptom. There IS a synchro on first gear, just not reverse. Uneven heating and cooling of brake rotors also warps them. Aggressive stopping whill warp them too. When rotors are turned, they are thinner, and are more likely to heat soak and cool warpping them sooner. Your better off just replacing them, they're cheap anyway.
$60 for a valve adjustment is pretty good. I had to pay $75.
The car not wanting to go into first is a problem us Si owners just have to face. The syncros on the Si tranny like to go out. That is when you replace the tranny with a LSD Type R tranny.
The vibration is most likely your rotors warping. This is another problem Civics have. I haven't had this problem luckily. Just get them turn while you're at Honda. It should be about $60 also. If you've got the money then buy some better rotors.
Have you ever changed the spark plugs? People always overlook those.

No I havent changed the spark plugs yet. Any suggestions on what kind to use?
Are the Brembo OE rotor replacements any good? Anyone know?
