Someone can correct me if I am a bit off, but a blockguard helps secure the cylander walls in place under higher RPM's. Honda uses a "floating" cylander wall to increase the amount of heat the head can dispurse and help in the overall cooling and efficiency of the engine. Thus, helping to make more power and keep temps down.

I think it helps keep manufacturing costs down also.
