Default A question about release bearing..

Hi..

I have a 95 EG and I have a problem with my clutch. Whenever I press the clutch pedal, it will give me a 'kkrrrrrrrr' sound.
I was told by my friend that it comes from my release bearing, and it need to be replaced. It seems that the previous owner -in attempt to save money- just change the clutch disc without changing the pressure plate and release bearing.

My question are what is the function of this release bearing and what would be the effect if I'm pending changing it?

thanks..
