Question about flywheel recessing for clutches
Just got in Exedy clutch. Its saids to recess the flywheel .065". Being the flywheel has been resurfac'd a few times, should I use this spec, or get a new OEM flywheel and then have it machined?
Or say I got an aftermarket flywheel, would I still need the machining done?
Thanks for the help.
Usually just have to resurface for clutch changes

It means that the fly wheel needs a .065'' step deck. the part where the disc contacts should be .065'' away from the part where the plate bolts on. Any good machinist can do it for $30 to 50 dollars
Ok I get it. The inner diameter of the flywheel is what gets machined down .065" ( where the disc sits) and the outter ridge (where the plate bolts) is left alone.
A friend just had his DSM flywheel done, and they machine'd the entire surface, both where the plate bolts on and where the disk sits, so they did that one wrong then I take it. It was supposed to be step'd also.

no it means that if it requires .020'' to be machined from the inner surface to clean it up, the outer surface must be machined the same amount to keep the gap(.065'') the same. lightining is generally done frome the back because if you remove to much from the front you will ruin the threads and dowel bores.
OK I see.
So say starting out with Brand New OEM flywheel. Then the whole process is just going to be bringing the clutch disk surface of the flywheel down .065". And leaving the rest alone???
thanks for all the help. Never delt with "stepping" like this before, its usually just having the flywheel resurfaced.

If you have a new fly wheel use it as is. What the clutch needs is a differance of .065'' between the two steps which is stock. What they are afriad might happen is that you may surface only the inner step say .020'' which would make the differance .045''.
Ohhh so the .065 is the OEM depth of the outer flywheel surface to the clutch disk surface.
So any New flywheel is going to work just fine then.
I really really appericate the help. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
