Question about changing rod bearings on an Accord.
I have a 94 Accord that sounds like it has a very slight knock. It only occurs when the car is warm and at about 2k-3k RPMS.
I pulled one of the bearings and the wear marks were on the back of the bearing instead of the journal side. Is this normal? I also noticed the sizing of the bearing were different.
What was stamped in the crank for rode sizes was
Piston 1 B3 What do these mean? Can I call a parts store and ask for a B3 bearing?
Piston 2 B5
Piston 3 B2
Piston 4 B3
I was hoping just to throw some new bearings in there and get by. Could I get away with using new original bearings? Or should I use plastigauge and choose new bearings?
Some expert help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

you need a manual for your car. It has the bearing code grid on there. Its kinda like a bingo card (numbers/letters on across the top and down the side). Match up the numbers and it will tell you what color bearings you need. You can even go to honda and ask them, they should be able to tell you.
I have a manual, there was no color on the bearings must have worn off.
Whats the deals with the colors anyway? What happened to just having sizes?
So I assume I just go by the number stamped in the crank? But is a part store going to know the correct bearing size if I tell them the color instead of the size?
B2 = yellow
B3= green
B5 = nothing listed
So what is a B5?
Anyone know what colors are what sizes?

You sure it's a 5? Your looking at the number on the rod right?

Yes I'm sure its a 5.
The numbers are actually stamped in the crank on the counter weights. For each rod journal.
Thanks for the help!!!

The number on the crank is for determining the main bearings. You need the letters off the crank and the numbers off the rods to chose the crorrect rod bearings.

I bought some platigage. I am going to measure the thickness, Any experts on here know how to use the stuff? Dont I have to know the thickness of the bearing in order to use the platigage?
What thickness should I be aiming for?
I know there are some engine rebuilding experts on here.

more then likely the parts store will not know. Just call your local honda dealership and talk to the parts person, they will tell you.
According to the 98-02 accord book (not sure what yours is) there is 4 going down, and 4 going across. So i am not sure what the 5 could be. The Green's are technically honda's std. according to them, so you can get them and machine out what ever clearances you need if you have too

Ok, looking at the manual again I see this. So the B is for the Rods and the numbers are for the Mains?
Where on the rods is the size info stamped? Is it on the rod cap? I'll check it out.
The manual says an oil clearance of .001 inch. So I will use the plastigage to check it out.
Thanks again guys.

I paid $90 for bearings from the Honda dealer because none of the Honda dealers in my area could tell me what colors were what sizes.

That's because Honda doesn't give us that information. We could tell you what color bearing halves you need for your stock parts.

To late...but thanks again for the help.
Since I had 2 different bearing sizes I would have only saved $40. Part store was charging me $25/set of 4. I would have needed two different sets.
I needed the job done by the 20th. The part store would have had to order anything but STD. I got finished last night at 1am. Drove the car to work today
