Default Programmable MSD ignition, how does it work?

I have a Apex'i Power FC and i am looking for a distributorless ignition now.

The MSD DIS-2 seems to be a good choose for me. MSD also offers a programmable DIS-2 ignition.

My question now is, how does it all work.

Which input signals does the Power FC/ECU get regarding the ign. and which does the MSD get?

Which signals does the MSD get from the ECU?

Does the MSD use it's own ignition map so the ign. map from the ECU is useless?

The MSD has a boost retard but not an individual cylinder knock retard, therefore i want to use the J&S Safeguard.

Does this combo work together? (Power FC, MSD DIS-2, J&S Safeguard)

I don't know alot about ign. so a complete write down would be more helpfull than single hints. Thanks.
