Problems with vtec head (i think)
Alright, im pretty damn sure my car is having some kind of oil problem. Just swapped in a new bottom end from a 2000 si. It still has the original b17 vtec head. Its running the b17 ecu. Awhile ago the check oil light was coming on. We replaced the oil filter and it turned off, so we figured that was it. Then i was driving it around and had opened it up a bit down this one street and i stalled when i came to a stop. I started it up and parked it and stalled once again when i parked it. I could hear the engine knocking. We opened up the bottom end and two sets of rod bearings were really messed up. The crank has about 10k miles on it, and it looked like it wasn't damaged from the rod bearings. So we replaced the rod bearings. Ive got about 200 miles on the bearings now, ive heard 200 to 500 miles to break those in. The engine has over 1000 miles since the swap. Either way, i just opened it up like 30 mins ago going down a street. I took it up to 8k in both first and second. When i slowed down to turn into my friends little street thing the car was having problems going, and it felt almost like my power steering went out. The oil light and battery light were on. It stalled when i stopped completely. I turned it on and parked it fine. And i drove it home fine, no knocking, no lights, but i kept it under 5k. So im thinking im having some kind of oil problem, perhaps related to the vtec head. This is similar to the problems i was having on the last engine before we swapped it out. What do you guys think it is? I don't wanna spin anymore bearings, and i don't wanna damage this crank and have to get yet another engine.
do you mind explaining your logic there? I've been driving the car around fine as long as i don't push it. Im not even risking taking it up to vtec at the moment. Seems kinda weird that its only a problem when i push it. I figure if i had a bad alternator, it would mess with the car all the time... Im not disagreeing, im just trying to understand. To much bad info on the net these days
its cool, i understand where your comming from but i dont see how low oil pressure could cause " having problems going, and it felt almost like my power steering went out. The oil light and battery light were on. It stalled when i stopped completely" it could be a bad ground also. i dunno just throwing ideas out. i had almost no oil pressure in my head for about a month and i never had any problems like that and unforutionatley i took it to 8300 several times...it ran fine untill you tried to go into vtec then it would struggle to gain power.
