Default Problem with shifter

My shifter doesn't stay in place anymore. No matter what gear it is in it can move freely from side to side like in neutral but even more loose. What could be the problem and how do I fix it?

can you shift in and out of each gear?> do you have a cable or hydrolic shifter?> i just had a problem with my girlfriends car, it was stuck in third gear and the shifter could move freely without affecting what gear i was in. it ended up being a broken shifter cable. one other thing that it maybe is a loose bearing between your shifter and shifter rod that may be coming disconnected.

Sounds like something is up inside the tranny..... Open it up and check the forks and actuators... You'll probably find something wrong.... What chassis/motor do you have??? Good Luck

I have a 95 Civic coupe with a b16 head and GSR block with a 96 ITR transmission. The transmission was just put in a couple days before the problem began. Maybe the transmission is the problem or could it be something is loose from the install or something?

The shifter itself may be loose.

It shouldnt be inside the tranny. Im sure that the bolt that holds the actual shifter in place is loose. Get under there and tighten that **** up yo.

Yea it could be... If the bushings in the shifter are worn then that will give you a lot of play... I've never seen it that bad however... My friend jdmEKhb had the same problem with his GSR tranny in his EK... One night he called me and you could put the car into what would normally be first gear and move it directly over into fifth without goin to neutral... It would do the same thing from reverse to second... Something internal was definately the problem with his tranny but i never opened it up to see what was wrong.... He sold the tranny to one of his ****** *** friend's that was gonna swap ITR internals into it but he never did... And his friend was the one that wouldn't let me open it up because what he really had in mind was to **** someone over and sell it to them... That's what he did ..... Just thought that may have been the case here but if you are able to drive then it most likely is something else.... Good Luck
