Default PR4 B18a pistons work in a PR3 B16a engine?

Hi guys,

I have a customer who brought me his turbocharged B16 and it is hurting a little. I found some P72 GSR pistons to use but they are too narrow to fit on the stock B16 rods. I could get the rods milled but the kid is on a budget...

So my question is this... I have a B18 from a 91 Integra sitting out back my shop, could I used the PR4 pistons in the B16 engine? I have searched for a while but can't come up with a positive answer. One post said that the valve cuts on the pistons had to be enlarged?

If anyone can shed some light on this kerfuffle I am in please let me know!

Thanks in advance

well, what's hurting with it? Does it even need new pistons? let us know. or What's it doing?

That's a rather extreme drop in compression if you go with the PR4's. You'd be better off making the P72's fit.

3 out of the 4 pistons are cracked between the rings...so yes it forsure needs new pistons. I am also doing headgasket, timing belt, water pump, etc... while I have the engine apart.

Like I said the kid is on a budget and I am sure milling the rods down to fit the GSR slugs is not cheap. Not as cheap as throwing on some pistons I have lying around anyway.

So.... Does anyone have an answer to my original question?

Machine shop would get around $40 to machine the rods.If you take your time you could do it with a belt sander or grinder and a set of mics or verniers. Its not a critical dimension, its just clearance.

Agreed. Shaving the rods (or pistons) to fit isnt expensive, and is the best route.

Thanks guys, on Monday I will look into a machine shop to get a price on shaving the rods...or I could probably tackle it myself.

But I would still like to know what is involved with putting the PR4 pistons into this B16, and if any mods to the pistons are needed.

You're looking at around 8.5:1 compression. I'm not sure if the pistons need valve reliefs cut or not, people do throw VTEC heads on stock LS blocks though...

You shouldn't need to but the valve reliefs unless your running some huge cams, but with a turbo, I wouldn't think you are.

So yea....you can run B18 pistons, the clearance should be fine. If you're really worried, just clay the motor first, its not expensive, all it take is time.

You would be losing a ton of usable compression on that turbo setup, though.
