Possible dumb/newb question.
I was going to try and adjust my valves on my own before I go back to college but . . . .
A. I don't know how
and
B. I'm not sure I have the tools at my house to do them
That being said, I usually do minor maitnence things like brake pads, oil changes, sparkplugs, filters, etc on my own . . . but im gonna bring the car into a shop for this one. This should only cost me about $60-80 to have it done right? If they adjust my valves they aren't gonna try and tell me i have a bent valve or something and try to screw me are they? Sorry if this is a n00bish post but I do'nt trust mechanics at all.

rather than whining about your sewing machine...sheesh...settle down.
wahhhhh...I drive a sewing machine.
okay - that being said.
Just take it to the shop, and tell them to do a valve-lash adjustment. Don't ask their opinion on your valves. If they give you their unsolicited opinion (you know...like I'm doing right now?) just take it for what it's worth, say thanks but no thanks, just do what I told you to do.
If you know how to do basic car maintenance, you should be able to walk into a shop and not get screwed. Just give them instructions.
you: "Me want this and only this. Please do this as I don't have time and I drive a sewing machine"
shop: "Okay...and we could do this and this, and this needs doing"
you: "NO!!! You just do what I ask and I be back in an hour. Me need burger king"
shop: "Okay okay...we do valve lash and leave valve stems alone"
I need to go to sleep.
