when we tor into my engine last weekend we began to transfer the ITR yellow outer/porflow inner springs over to the new head and noticed something. One of the inner springs was BROKEN! has this happened to anyone else or was this just my personal misfortune? Is it a good idea to run a static spring with the progressive stock outer? I know this is good for a drag motor, I am not convinced that this spring was made for the street. can anyone weigh in here?

....but I have heard of Portflows retainers wearing thin, so thin you can bend it with your bare fingers.
To orig poster, whcih cams were you using ? I've done a lot of the portflows and never saw this happen. Try giving Tom a call at 310 257 0351 and let him know, 1st he'll ask which cam because maybe you were coil binding or your valve seat was shot ... I've sure he'd have to problem replacing one spring instead of you having to buy a new set.

Valve springs are the most highly stressed part in a car and need to be handled VERY carefully. ANY tiny scratch is a stress riser and they're guaranteed to break there.
