please help settle our arguing...
i and my brother are arguing since last night about what causes the sound of our exhaust when idling. i told him it was some sort of misfiring and he said it was probably lack of backpressure so i'm hoping someone could shed some light here.
here's the story, the car is a 99 SiR, the mods are HKS filter, 2.5" exhaust pipe from the STOCK header to the aftermarket muffler. the reason i changed to 2.5" is bcoz i'm going to turbocharge it very soon. i swapped my stock pipe to the guy who sold me the turbo coz he's gonna turn his car to stock trim again coz he's crazy about big bikes now.
after swapping the pipes, i didn't really paid any attention to the sound of the exhaust as i was observing the lose of low-end torque. one day, i went through a flood and the engine stalled, after checking everything the car is back on the street with no permanent damage(i guess). this is when i began to notice the sound of the exhaust is different.
as i remember with the stock pipe, the sound of my exhaust at idling is a steady sounding vrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, but now the sound is a steady sounding vroovroovroovroovroovroovroovroovroovroo. i concluded it to be some kind of misfire since i was thinking that only the pitch (how deep or how high) of the exhaust will change but still sound steady while my brother's arguing it's the lose of backpressure.
who's right between us?
what exactly does a misfire sound like? can an engine misfire at idle? i did check the spark of each spark plug and the injectors are working.
the car pulls strong and aside from that stupid sound, i do experience some not-too-loud backfiring whenever i decelerate sort like a succesive farting sound.
hope to hear from you guys.

check your compression. to check for to see if you are firring in all your cylinders. As for the sound. could be because of lack of back pressure, but that would be more on high RPM and you would get a backfire sounds. 2.5 is really not that big for n/a motors and almost kinda small for turbo, depending on how much boost. HTH at least some.
