i need help with tranny. its ls tranny (manual) and it was freshly rebuilt and then ran without fluid. as a result 5th gear sings while driving...what do i do about it. the ppl here in atl say just replace the gear and syncro. some say replace gear, syncro, and the 2 shafts and bearings...damn... help if you can

it makes no other noises and shifts very well.

 

Probably one of the OTHER gears. The synchro cones for the gear that's engaged aren't spinning against each other since that gear is engaged. While you're driving in 5th, all the others are spinning against each other.

That's kinda acedemic, since you'll have to dismantle the tranny. At that point, you'll be silly if you don't inspect everything carefully.

 

while driving no other gears make noise though...but i will inspect them all...

 

whenyou tear it apart, you prob could just replace the 5th gear if thats just messed up. as for the countershaft being messed up might as well by a new tranny.

 

iam with postman totally. your not going to need a countershaft.

 

Also, check the upper main bearing as well.

if you take it apart, you will probably see wear on the top of the 5th gear cone and/or reverse cone. you will also probably see a groove wore into the hub on the top and/or bottom from the tops of the cones. i wouldn't doubt the hub is discolored and black and purple from the heat.
