Default please help, hot negative terminal

i let a friend take out my turboed 92 miata
hes thinking about buying it and lent me his 06 R6

anyway he went to start it and it was dead
he then realised the negative battery cable was disconnected

he drove it around for a few miles after reconnecting it when the car died(even if the cable popped off while driving it should still run) well he coasted to the sideof the road and found the negative had come off again. after he reconnected it for the 2nd tim ehe drove about 20 yards and the car died one more time.
when he popped the trunk the wire coating was burning off.

what could cause the negative to get this hot?
please help asap
mike

something is grounding out on your chassic. you have a power wire touchin the chassis somewhere is only my best guess.

i assume i figured out the problem
the rubber boot thta covers the positive terminal was off
and the battery got pushed so far up that i think it grounded out on the frame.

thanx
