Default Please help with horrendous screeching

I installed a new outer tie rod today and when i got done and drove the car away from the auto skill center (hobby garage on base) i had (still have) a HORRENDOUS screeching noise like nails on a blackboard whenever i turn right. it's coming from the right front suspension, where i changed the tie rod out. but the ONLY thing i touched was the tie rod. I've looked at it and can only think something's rubbing against my rotor....but the rotor has plenty of clearance with everything else that may be in contact with it. 92 integra, H&R sport springs and that's it. stock wheels/brakes/etc.

Any thoughts?

looks like the caliper or the bracket is rubbing against the rotor......anyone have any ideas why this might be, and how to fix it?

In my Civic back in the day, I would commonly get a rock or two stuck between the brake rotor and the dust shield and it screeched like hell had broken loose. Another time, one of the clips in the brake caliper had started rubbing against the rotor, and it screeched like hell had broken loose. Just check out the brakes real good, and make sure you don't have anything jammed in them.

like i said.....the caliper (or at least the bracket) on the outside of the rotor is actually physically rubbing against the rotor. and i have no idea how it got that way or how to fix it. and if i drive too much (something of which i have NO choice at this point) on it, i'll end up replacing the frickin brand new brembo OE blanks i just bought

Didn't see that part, sorry. I don't know how to fix your problem at this point, I'd have to take a look at it. Again, sorry.

I'm assuming you did not unbolt anything with the caliper or bracket when you replaced the tie rod end. My guess is that while apart something got between the rotor and hub and is keeping the rotor out a bit from the hub allowing the rotor to not be centered in the bracket. The best bet is to unbolt the caliper and bracket and pull the rotor off and check to be sure it is seated properly. On the plus side, if the rotors are new, then the bolts should not be rusted in so it should come apart without too much trouble.

Are you sure it is not just the shield behind the rotor rubbing against it? It's really easy to bend them when working on the front end and they will make quite the racket too.

oh i definitely made sure the dust shield isn't rubbing. i'll be taking a closer look at it tomorrow morning. hell the knuckle/bearing combo is 12 years old by now; i'm sure it's overdue for a replacement anyway. *shrugs*

i'll keep everyone posted as to what my problem was soon as i figure it out.

update: i cut away the entire dust shield and still the damn noise. is there any way the bearing could have slipped outward some, causing the rotor to be sticking out further than normal? this is the ONLY thing i can think of anymore....

suggestions?

rebuilt when i installed the new OEM brakes (brembo blanks and axxis metal masters on all 4 corners) about 5 weeks ago. cleaned 'em all up and installed new seals. i looked more closely and discovered the inside top and bottom portions of the caliper mounting bracket (on the outer portion of the rotor) are pretty shiny, as well as some scoring going on which fits the location of the caliper bracket. All i can think is that the rotors weren't turned enough before i installed them, causing (after the pads broke in a bit) the interference. i'm almost thinking a simple turning would help, but herein lies my doubt about this theory: if more turning were required, 1. why aren't all the brakes (or at least more than just one) having this problem, and 2. why did it take over a month for it to start happening?

the general consensus on g2ic seems to be that i'll be needing a new bearing/hub assembly.....lovely.

TALK ABOUT GHEY

my idiotic *** forgot that the caliper/bracket assembly is adjustable. all i needed to do was turn the bolts about 3/4-turn counter-clockwise and bam. squeal all gone.

heh.....oh well, guess i've got a new knuckle assembly outta the ordeal.
