Default Pics of my valves... bent???

well took the head off and heres some pics of the valves. The exhaust valves in the last pic seem messed up to me, maybe its just carbon buildup?? they are like rippled.

its hard to tell from the pics, if they were bent i think they'd let you know performance wise.

when i took the motor apart it had a spun bearing, two cracked ringlands, and maybe a bent valve... so there was really no way to diagnose the problem.

1. spray brake cleaner in from the ports, if it leaks out the valves they are bent.

2. take the springs off. take the valves out and clean them. put them back in. spin the valve and see if it feels straigt and sounds 'even'

you can get the head flat and level with the valve's pointing in the air and pour some gasoline in the combustion chamber, with the plug in of coarse. and then just watch both intake and exhaust ports to see if any gas leaks out the ports.

^^ What FastEK9 said.

If you have the valve springs and retainers removed. I have coated the valve (where it seats) with a black sharpie marker, inserted the valve and turned it 1/4 turn with light pressure. Remove valve and look at the contact patch. Is is what you want?

take the valve and roll it on a flat surface. it should roll evenly if straight. It will wobble and will be noticably warped if it is bent.

what would cause it to have a rippled top though? is that normal for a head with 150k on it?

The ripples are byproducts of fuel combustion depositing themselves on the hot valve head. That is why you see carbon on the intakes and these brownish "deposits" on the exhausts. It is normal. They can be easily cleaned with a fine wire brush mounted in a Dremel.

put water in the intake/exhaust chambers, if the water leaks out from teh valves, then you know its not sealing.

but it might still seal, but you could have bent valves.

it might be worth investing in some new keepers and valve seals and take it to a machine shop and have them mill the head a tad, and have them look at the valves and stuff.

putting it through the parts washer wouldnt hurt either

take em out and put each one in a drill, spin the drill and move your fingers up and down the valve! you should be able to tell if they are bent. best bet though is to just take them to a machine shop and get them checked out.

I did the gas in the chamber thing and the exhaust side was good... the intake side leaked though... so this means that my intake valves are bent?

its not like it poured out or anything. sprayed it off with air compressor... waited 10 seconds and then i could see a little bit was coming out

the 'rippling' you see is pretty normal... just a build up of carbon... you can see it on my valves in this picture:

this was after the valves were cleaned with a die grinder with a scotch-brite attachment
