Painting alternator??

My alternator looks like **** and im doin a swap so i want it to look nice. Can i just paint over it? Or should i take it apart?

Take it apart and have it chromed, you'll pick up an extra 40hp in the process.

Thanks for the stupid response. I just dont want to put some crust alternator in there when all my other **** is brand new looking or painted

Idk maybe use some metal cleaner on it? You can barely see it anyway.
