over heating b16 problem
i have a 92 civic i have a b16 with a 84 mm je pistons and crower rods and darton sleeves closed deck a pwr radiator and a fal fan with a 180 thermo has a t3/t4 only has 400 miles on motor so far but the car will heat up with when it is under load like going up a hill i have been told the closed deck will run hotter but i think this is to hot and if i drive it in the city i have no problem but on the freeway at a constant speed like 75 mph i have been told the head gasket could not be seated good or that my radiator can not get good air flow becuse the front mount is to big sorry for the long story but i need help what do you think
Closed deck can run hot...may be a faulty or wrong thermo...thermo may be opening too soon not letting the coolant/water to cool in the radiator... are you running a stock front bumper?
yes i have a stock bumper there are holes drilled in the thermo do you think this is not letting it cool should i get a 160 thermo it has a 180 what do you think thanks for the response
Strange that its not cooling at highway speeds. Sounds like a problem with either the water pump not flowing well enough at higher rpms or your radiator is not getting the air it needs. It seems odd. Usually cars overheat during stop and go city driving.
I seriously doubt its the thermostat from the problem you describe. It would be more likely to do it at idle/city driving than highway speeds if it was the thermostat.
1) What kind of engine management system are you using? Could be that you're leaning out in the higher RPM range and due to the lean-out/closed deck block, you're just not sufficiently cooling the engine.
2) Could also be one of the coolant passages within the block is air-locked, meaning that there is air trapped inside and not allowing coolant flow to that specific area. This is a less-likely situation though, unless the air-locked passage happens to be relatively close to the temperature sensor...
3) To rule out the chance that the radiator isn't getting sufficient airflow during highway speeds, you could also temporarily put the fan on a switch or run a 12volt hot wire directly to the fan power wire so it is constantly on and take it for a run on the highway....Lol, or if you're up to it remove the front bumper completely and see if thats it.
