I tried googling and with a couple of different searches and terms didn't find any information....

Does anyone know the flow route through the oil filter on the old D series engines (suspect it's the same for B's etc)..... I am wanting to know if the oil pump, pumps the oil through the threaded post into the filter or if it goes through the outer rim of the filter into the threaded post.

The reason I ask is I didn't pull the pump off and check it and before I slap the engine into the car I'd like to hand pump some oil out the oil filter orifice. I would like to prep properly for the flow so as to not have significant cleanup as I assume the pump will work just fine, but need the peace of mind seeing the pump push out oil to the filter area.

If you know, this tidbit of information will prove very helpful. Thanks in advance.

 

first through the outer rim (ring of smaller holes on filter) then exits the filter through the center threaded portion into the oil galley.

as a general rule, canister style filters flow from outside to inside. (in-line fuel filters, hydraulic filters, cone-style air filters ect.)
