I still wonder where is it.
Yes should change the engine oil already. You have to change it after certain distance you travel with your car. It is a must! Else you engine life cycle will be short and lots of problem will come soon.
Anyone who feel free can drop by my website for cars. http://www.montaguespirit.com

The "rule of thumb" is to change your oil (and filter) every 3000 miles (depending on conditions- driving, enviornment, etc.)... 10k is stretching it too far... The longer he runs it, the lower the oil's viscosity will be- causing metal to metal "friction" from the engine's internals (in the long run) due to lack of the oils' lubricating properties (low viscosity)....
Your friend's engine is not "fuked" (yet), just change the oil AND filter ASAP....

I work for a company with about 50 fleet GM trucks. they are lucky to get fresh oil every 8K or so. All of them have 100K+ many have over 150K on them. i am not suggesting that anyone try this with their own car, as i am sure it will NOT extend engine life, BUT i know it can be done.
I can tell you from experience that your car is not messed up at all. Although it is not wise to go that long without an oil change. som manufactuers state that it is a waste to change your oil less than 7.5k miles, some say 3, my dad does 5 just to make it easier to track. I can tell you that I have a 1992 Buick Century with almost 200k miles on it and while my brother was driving it he went about 35k miles without changing the oil. He did this about 3 times. Nothing is wrong with the engine, as a matter of fact the only thing that has ever been wrong was a broken crank pulley and all that did was slow the car down in first gear. I would never consider a car F'ed until it will no longer run period. Change the oil, and be more careful next time.
