Default oil burning question...Urgent...

Alright A friend of mine bought a 95 gsr w/ supposedly a bad motor (smokes kinda bad). He took it to an Acura dealership and the tech looked at it real quick and told him it has bad rings maybe a bad head gasket. He cam to me and asked me to fix it I told him to get it compression tested first and he didn't and just went with what the acura tech told him. Well he brought the car to me w/o the radiator so I didn't start it and I just pulled the motor. When the motor was tilted I noticed oil dripping out of the throttle body. I opened up the throttle and there was some oil in the intake manifold.
Now I'm just thinking it is a really bad failure in the pcv system and the motor could be fine (58K miles). I'm going to pull the intake manifold off in the next day or so to inspect. What should I look for?
Also can I do a compression test on the motor with it out of the car. How would I do this and would the results have any meaning with out the car being warmed up first?

TIA
Kevin

About the compression test, it can still be helpful to you. The numbers will be lower, but at least you can see if they are even or not. If you get 130 across the board or something, you may not need a headgasket or rings.

What about valve seals?

if it smokes after idling for more than a couple minutes its the valve seals. compression will be normal though. just changed mine at 100K.

if it smokes while getting on it it sounds like the rings.

This is the exact same symptoms I'm suffering from. Just rebuilt my B18b1 (done by Leitner & Busch of Toronto ... the dumb ******* ), it's got over 4000 km on it so far and anytime a let it idle it will just puff blue smoke, after a few minutes of driving the blue smoke will go away. I had a compression test done and it came out 160 across all four (9.2:1 pistons, slightly milled head, mild pnp) So it's definitely a seal? Can anyone else confirm this? Could it also be a slightly bent valve or a valve guide problem?

I wanna get the head pulled this week and have it fixed.

To do the compression test do I just hook the starter up to a battery. If done like this will the little trick of adding some oil to a low cylinder to see if it goes up or not work in order to determine if it is rings or not.

Thanks for the help guys.

You could I guess. I just unplug the fuel pump fuse, and the wire from my coil. Yes the oil trick will work, and would be a good test for you to do.

If the motor is out of the car just do a leak down test. Blow by ( weak comp rings ) will cause oil in the intake manifold.
