so it's not a huge involved process, and I could replace the engine wiring harness without getting into the dash and undoing all those plugs?

cool.. this leads to my next question... a little more specific to my problem though... maybe you can help me out.
I've got a '97 civic cx with an OBDI h22 in it. Could I just plug an obdII prelude wiring harness into the civic chassis and plug everything up to the motor, and then getn an OBDII-OBDI adapter harness to run the OBDI prelude ecu and have it all work? This would also elimintate adding any wires for my h22 swap.

No, the problem lies in the fact that the 96-01 civic uses a one piece engine/ecu
harness unlike the prelude/accord/integra which is two piece.
My suggestion would be to find a 99-01 civic si/EX harness and extend the
necessary wires and then use the harness adapter to use the older ecu.

96-98 civic engine harness is different than the 99-00 harness. The thing that is different is the connectors to the ECU. You might be ok if your going to get an adapter harness and use an OBD1 ECU. I dont know for sure, so i just wanted to let you know.

Is this 4th plug green? If so, the green one in my car has wires from it going to the ECU plugs (from the person who originally did the obdI conversion by hand). Will this get replaced witha new harness too so that I can start anew with full OBDII?
yes, it would be best to use a 96-98 harness because there is a SMALL wiring
different in the underdash harness plug. nothing major, but less work to do.

True, but could you figure out how to rewire it? I sure couldn't. The green connector is what threw me off.....
