Default OBD2a OBD2b whats the difference?

Im going to be swaping a longblock in for a friend, he has a 96 Civic EX but the motor we are swaping in is out of a 99 Civic EX. Is there anything I need to switch over, or is the only difference in the ecu?

Thanks.

There is no difference in the engine harness

The 96 is OBD2a

The 99 is OBD2b

Just buy a conversion harness and you can reuse everything.

The obd2a ecu and harness worked fine and everything plugged into the obd2b motor. No conversion harness needed.

You would need a conversion harness if you were trying to plug an OBD2b ECU into an OBD2a harness.

Relax. I was clarifying for the other posters, who were completely correct in assuming you'd need the conversion harness since you never originally mentioned swapping the entire engine harness.
