Default Notchy shifter, whats wrong?

Hey all, my 92 VX (basically stock) seems very hard to shift. The shifter does not move through the gears smoothly, and feels "rough". I tried changing the tranny oil, but still it seems pretty rough. Any thoughts what could be wrong?

While Im asking, I also notice a loud squealing noise from the rear wheels. It only seems to make the noise when I reverse, and it is pretty much constant as long as the car is moving in reverse. (Only suspension mod is eg6 front brakes.)

Thanks in advance to anyone with ideas, I wish I could give more info, but Ive been too busy to poke around to getting more details.

How does it shift with the engine off? If no problem, suspect the clutch isn't fully disengaging. If it's still rough, might be something's bent?

The squeal from the rear might be dirty or worn brake shoes. Try applying a little bit of parking brake while backing and see if it quiets down or goes away.

I will have to check on the shifting with the engine off, but what would cause the clutch to not disengage? I have a feeling it will be rough shifting with the engine off anyway, I just can't recall right now if I have tried it.

I had thought of the parking brake idea a while after I originally posted this. I'll probably be going out in a bit, I can try these two ideas out.

Thanks for the input perfectionist!

I am considering braving the elements tommorrow, but its going to be pretty durn cold. I have to look at my EAVC also, the idle has been acting funny. One last bump for the night.
