Default non-MTBE gas?

76 has rolled out w/ non-MTBE gas in CA. And I *think* i saw somewhere that gov davis signed an EO that mandated non-MTBE gas by jan 2003 (anyone confirm/correct the fact?).

now... what are the benefits/disadvantages of each for your car? I know that MTBE is a significant environmental risk when spilled/leaked, but want to focus on the performance of the gas in a car here.
