Hmm... VTEC is engauged by two reference points: oil pressure and engine temperature. Also, some codes will disengauge VTEC as well.

Is this a recent problem? What have you done to the car recently that would cause this? Just back track everything!

Code 9 is No. 1 cylinder position sensor. It's located on the distributor. Solve that problem first and then worry about the vtec issue later if it's still going on

Are there any other problems that could cause vtec not to engage (non-code related)? I have a b16 in my 90 hatch and the pw0 ecu throws a code (vtec solenoid), but the solenoid and wiring are checked and fine. The engine "coughed" every once in a while. Replaced the ecu with a pm6 reprogrammed by zdyne (more aggressive fuel, disable 2nd O2) and the code goes away. Vtec still doesnt engage but the car runs worse ("coughs" every 1/5 mile or so). Plugs, wires, dizzy cap replaced during swap. I used the dizzy cap from a 90 teg, was that a bad decision? Could anything like timing/ignition stop vtec from engaging?
