Default No Brake Pressure?

My friend had a 95 celica and when he pushed on his brakes today, there wasnt any pressure. SO he had to downshift to stop his car. What could the problem be?

lots o things...was there any fluid under the car? if so check the area where was the fluid comming from look for broken brake lines and what not. if he is completely out of fluid fill the reservoir up again and pump the brakes to see exactly where it is comming from.
