Default Nice ring compressors for building engines...

I own three different kinds of ring compressors and they all kind of suck...i've seen a style of ring compressor that I want to buy, but havent seen any forsale.

Its two pieces of aluminum that form a cylinder and are tightened with two "hose clamps esque" the cylinder is slightly tapered and is about 4-6 inches long. My machinist seemed to think that total seal had these available.

I need one for a 99.5mm bore piston (EJ25) thanks!

That's the kind I use and honestly they suck. I've replaced my Snap-On one twice, and I have a Craftsman now that is exactly the same and probably won't do 2 more pistons. The tab that holds the band from snapping open always wears out, and you have to constantly adjust screws to make it work.

I've been using one of these sets for years.

^^^ the one that I have...works pretty well, but Im sure there has to be something better out there. What about a solid machined piece that is tapered...and bolts to the block via the head studs? then it would be perfectly centered and wouldn't have a gap?

You don't need it to center itself, just let the skirt hang out the bottom of the tool.

If I bolt it to the block...it will need to be centered. if I were just holding it with my free hand there would be no issue, however...if you've ever installed a set of pistons you would know that they rings occasionally "hang" up as they're going into the block...I'm not very keen on this happening and I wish to totally eliminate it.

Ahh, you just need more practice.

I'm pretty sure I've put together more engines than you have...no offense. I don't like it when the rings hang up...I don't like applying more force than I should to push the piston down the bore...and I don't like doing things that cause stress risers or create dynamic stress.

I'll machine my little contraption and show you all when I'm done. expletive shitty ring compressors. It will be engine and cylinder specific, but once I make a set...I'll have it for life.
