Default newbie question

I just bought a 00 si with 100k and i dont know if the previous owner changed the timing belt so i want to check the condition of my timing belt. when i remove my valve cover do i have to replace my valve cover gasket?

It's usually a good idea to, but you don't have too. They're fairly cheap, but I only replace mine when I get a leak. You can usually just reuse it, but wipe off any excess oil that is around the sealing surface and on the gasket and be sure to tighten it down evenly.
