Are there any downsides to this conversion? It it as functional as an original OBD1 motor? can i eliminate 2nd 02 sensor?

What are you saying, do you wanna swap your whole interior wiring harness?? If your car is OBD2 and you want to make it not run those few sensors that are customary of OBD2 then just run a conversion harness.

NO(cost?) YES YES.

Often it is done just to eliminate the 2nd O2 sensor.

Nope, no downsides at all. Actually, you can probably categorize this as an upgrade. It does eliminate the 2nd 02 and any other extra sensors OBD2 engines are equipped with; they actually become dormant/not used, if you run an OBD1 ecu.

Another thing you can look into is running a JDM OBD2 ecu.....those also do not look for a 2nd 02 or CKP sensor (sensor on oil pump), and VTEC pressure switch (green plug on vtec solenoid). Its basically thinks like an OBD1 ecu but is OBD2 hardware.
