i took off the intermediate shaft and axle off of the tranny as one piece. so, i want to take off the axle from the intermediate shaft off of the vehicle. you might be wondering why would i want to do this, well, i want to do this because i tried to hammer the axle off of the intermediate shaft while it was on the car for about three continuous days with no luck.
so, i want to do this because i want to take the axle off to replace the set ring because i'm afraid all that hammering might have loosened the axle a bit. this is just to avoid from any sort of catastrophe or trouble while i race and to avoid from doing the same job twice.
any help is appreciated. it is pretty hard since the intermediate shaft is no longer bolted down. thanks in advance. as for the ones that have been following me on this project, i know, i know, this **** is taking a long *** time. especially since i can only work on the car after work (2 jobs)

I ran into the same situation a couple months ago replacing cv boots..
To make a long story short.. I never got that axle out of the intermediate shaft..
As long as you havent been hammerin' it sensless, I wouldnt worry about any damage.. Check the axle for any "free play"... If it seems ok, then go with it..

is there supposed to be any play between the axle and the intermediate shaft? as of right now, there is some play between the two. it shifts back and forth when i push it towards the intermediate shaft and towards the opposite side as well.
oh yeah, thanks for the reply

In answer to the play question, yes, there will be a little bit.
Personally I'm wondering if anyone has had luck doing this job. I've got an intermediate shaft, off the car, with a trashed inner joint attached to it. No amount of pounding the joint (which is busted so damage doesn't much matter) with a BFH has gotten it out.
It'd really be nice to get this thing out of there since I need the inner joint to do my warranty claim on the axle that lasted one and a half days on track. Anyone got suggestions, or is the whole assembly trash now?

you need to use a brass hammer and place the axle on a vise if possible. Also, you should spray some rust off lube if rusted or WD40. But, with a brass hammer you hammer the axle without damaged; for, brass hammer's are a soft metal and it some likely to break first then the axle itself.
But here's how to do it - most likely the c-clip is wedge during the hammering. so, tap on the outter shaft to release the c-clip. also spray some lube before you tap on the outter shaft. then hammer the inboard joint hard - remember use a brass hammer so no damage would occur to the axle.

the last time that happened to me, the driver side axle was bad. since that axle had no grease in it, all that heat went to the intermediate shaft and fused the axle and the intermediate shaft together. it took me a 1/2 hour of solid hammer work, to separate the two. now when i work on the tranny, if i notice that that axle doesn't wanna come out of the intermediate shaft i will replace it!
