Default Need Help picking an Impact gun

Ok, I need an impact gun for work (lube tech/entry level tech at dealership) and Need to come up with what exact model I need soon, but cant decide on a couple things. I've talked to some people about what to buy, and narrowed it down to Ingersoll-Rand or Snap-on. I'll mostly just be using it for lugnuts now, but I want to buy one that will last me a long time, with power of at least 600ft/lbs.

Snap-on is expensive, but comes with a 2-year replacement warranty, I dunno about Ingersoll-Rand's warranty. I heard not to buy Blue-Point, which is like a lesser snap-on. Should I get composite body or steel? I like the lightness of the composite, but will it last as long? Also, at what point do I have more power than I'm really gonna effectively use, or is there no such thing as too much ***** on an impact?

All I really have to go on is every one else's impacts I've used at work, and of course my favorite was the $400 Snap-on, but I'm looking to spend around $250 or less

Any other areas I should look at to compare? Like I said I need to decide which is best fairly quickly, as It's gonna be my X-mas gift from my dad

Cliffs for the lazy:
Need 1/2" Impact
Snap-on $$ vs Ingersoll-Rand
Composite vs steel body
Only wanna buy this once, not buy another better one later
What to look for?

Ive had my I/R composite for.... 3 years probably now... used everyday, my first week I didnt put the condom thing on it (incase you drop it) and I dropped it hard and cracked a corner.... I didnt want to waste my 350 bucks, so i put the condom on it, and have used it ever since with no problems! haha.

But.... I dont know why you are asking this here anyhow.... you work at a shop... most people here dont.

and PLEASE take down that UTI avatar

have a snap on one, i dont really like it, i have 2 IR's and have been working fine since the day i bought them...if i was paying for them i would go with the IR, but i guess if you dont care how much money your dad spends buy the snap on, cant go wrong hahaha

I'm asking it here because most of the people at my shop are either new to the game and just bought an impact based on the theory of "the more expensive the better", and havent experienced much besides their own, or are older dudes who have about the best there is, which I can't afford

And I do care how much he spends, honestly I was gonna buy it for myself but he wanted to, I'm still gonna be shopping for it as though I was buying it.

By the way, why should I take down my UTI avatar? I can't have pride in my school like any other student?

My experience... go with a Composite I/R. Great power... durability, and i have a I/R building a mile down the road from me. hah

I'm thinking about the IR 2135Ti. Titanium, weighs just under 4lbs with 1,000/700 ft lbs, it's around $250. It may be a little overkill, but It sounds pretty good right now. Anyone have that exact gun?

I'm surprised at the amount of people preferring IR over Snap-on...hm...

You don't need that much power. You're not going to be working on semi trucks.

Get an IR to begin with. It'll have plenty enough power to break loose crank bolts and snap studs if you have to. And it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

You learn to drive in a Honda, not a Mercedes. Soon enough you'll develope a taste for which tools you prefer.

Most of those ratings are not instant... if you hold it for like 2 mins. straight... you cant really go on those.

Mine is ..... haha, holy expletive, thats the same exact gun i have. Dude, get it, you wont be disappointed at all.

It says that... but it might after 2 mins... I have the same gun and worked at honda/acura/subaru dealers with it. no probs. cheap, light, and awesome. Just buy a cushion condom thingy for it (dont know why its called, mine is almost like a foam condom)

I picked up a craftsman one. 700 ft/lbs on that bad boy. Even with just my little 11 gallon compressor backing it up, it'll spin crank pulley bolts off pretty easily.

I have the Matco 1769 1/2 gun, rated at 700 ft lbs in reverse. Great gun, and another plus, all matco impacts are made by IR.

I would go with the IR, you can abuse it and it last a really long time. Just make sure you oil the damn thing. People fucked impact gun up because they don't oil them.

if you are mostly going to use it for lugnuts, the IR 231 or 2131 will be plenty; most honda lugnut torques are under 100ftlbs.
Torque sticks are really great to keep from stripping out lug studs.
when you get to the time that you need to remove crank pulley bolts, you can keep an IR 261 in your toolbox.

Well, lugnuts is mostly what I'm using it for now, but I dont see the point in buying a less powerful gun now and buying a better one later, I may as well just buy a good one now that will last me. And we do use torque sticks (PS, I work at a Toyota dealership )

Get the IR-2135ti. I have that gun and it works amazing. It's nice and quite, very lightweight and hasnt failed me yet. IMHO its the best in its class especially for the price.. I bought my new off ebay for just under 200 shipped

i was a professional tech for like 3 years as much as i love my snap on tools, IR has never done me wrong with their air tools. i would definatly reccomend the IR over snap on for an impact.

alot of the major companys out there (including craftsman) use IR's guns and just rebadge them and mark up the price too BTW.

I bought this also and Craftsman has the exact thing in black for $10 cheaper. It weighs and has the same exact ratings as the 2131QT.

I exchanged it for the 2135ti though

More expensive than a IR 2135ti, it weighs more(lightweight = less fatigue), lower torque rating.

thats the truth right dur

currently a tech for 4 years. snap-on isnt he greatest tool brand out there anymore. matco has alot of **** that snap-on cant touch(ie 60-tooth ratchet). the only snap-on tool that i still believe in is thier screwdrivers, eventhough 80% of my tools are snap-on. most of my airtools are IR except my 3/8's impact which is snap-on but thats only because it was the strongest 3/8's at the time
