I built a b20vtec motor. threw it into my civic, and blew my driver side mount right away. But that's not the point, anyways......... I took my car too a friends shop, to check timing, because I do not own a timing light, so I needed to use his, and timing ended up being perfect. Well I never even payed any attention to this, but all of a sudden he says ur dripping a **** load of oil on my floor.... come to find out, it's coming from the corner of the head near the timing belt, and it made a pretty big puddle of oil on his floor for only being there for 10 minutes.


I never noticed any kind of oil, in my coolant, nor coolant in my oil. Can someone help me out here? im clueless as to what the main problem could be, my main guess is the headgasket blew, but I would think I would have heard/felt that? Any advice would be most appreciated.

 

Anti-Freeze would be leaking if it was the head gasket and it wouldn't drip on the floor like that. Check the cam seals.

 

but it is coming right from where the head meets the block..... where the headgasket is.

I thought the same thing, I would figure there would be some anti-freeze if that was the case.

The oil drains back from the head at the corners. Sounds like either a bad head gasket or mating surface.

 

i concure.....check cam seals or the valve cover gasket!!!

i know from experience!

 

how would valve cover or cam seals be the cause? seening how it's coming straight from the head...... ? oh well I will check on that 2marow... any more advice is most welcome. Thanx guys.

well i just ran a compression test...........

ran 155psi on #4,3,2 and 150psi on #1 cylinders...... Im not sure what it is supposed to be at... btu that's what came up.... all cam seals are fine, valve cover gasket is brand new.... and still in great shape, no leaks there. it's coming directly from where the head and the block mate.... so im assuming headgasket? or something else.... any other idea's?

well the only thing you can do is take the head off, and check the headgasket again. before installing a new head gasket and putting the head on. Use the head studs and tighten it by hand down the head stud holes. Make sure the threads down there isnt stripped by any chance. This tends to happen on most LS/Vtec or B20/Vtec swaps. Happended to me once on my LS/v.

 

I know the studs were not stripped when inserted, and I re-inserted them later to check for stripping actually, too make sure they were fitting properly in the block.


So apply some moly lube to the thread on the head studs? Tighten them down till the headstud completely stops? Then what torque should I use? last time I used 72ft-lb.

Also once I pull the head, how then can I tell if the headgasket is bad? I have never dealt with a bad headgasket before.

Inspect it in the affected area. Also check the head and block with a straight edge.

That was my plan actually... to check with straight edge..... well once i get time... if I ever do, I will check the head and block.. .etc. etc. Thanx for all your help guys.
