Default Need help ASAP timing issues on new engine

I just got done dropping my new motor in I just built and it started up first crank (after bringing up oil/fuel pressure of course) and ran good for around 60miles then it started to hesitate and finally died and wouldn't start up again.

At first I thought it wasn't getting fuel, so I bought a fuel pressure gauge because I wanted one anyway and fuel pressure turned up fine...so, okay, its not the fuel pump...then I check compression, 150psi across the board...fine...then I went and got a timing light because the timing needed adjusting anyway, and sure enough I found my problem...

The timing is waaaaaaaay retarded, I turned the distributor as far as I could advance it but it didn't bring up the timing marks all the way up, so I completly took out the bolts holding the distributor and advanced it far enough where the timing marks were lined up where they were suppost to be and the car idled like it was suppost to...but there is only one problem, the distributor is advanced so much the bolts wont fit in anymore, and if i turn it back to where the bolts will go in, the timing is still too retarded.

What do I do?!?!

you're probably off a tooth or two on the timing belt.

You might be right, although i was very careful when putting on the timing belt...how many degrees would 1 or 2 teeth off put the timing off? It is waaaaay off...and like I said, it started up first crank and ran fine, then started bogging and then died and wouldn't start up...

That's the only think i think it can be, the distributor can only go on one way and the timing marks are like 1 1/2 inches from where they are suppost to be...i guess ill adjust the cam gear 1 tooth, retension the timing belt and then turn the crank by hand to make sure the valves wont slap the pistons...that would be bad...

Thanks
