Default Need Help - all you electronic junkies :)

I would like for someone to build me a connector for an RS232 (9 pin serial port) which can be used to plug into a cellphone to transmit data via cellphone or internet which would be received by another device connected to the RS232 port on my laptop or via a modem on my laptop. Can this be done ?

Apparently my engine management system, Speedpro, has a feature which can send datalogging info via the internet for a pitcrew to see whats happeneing with the car, a small option I think.

thanks,
Greg

not gonna happen. You need to get a cellular phone with a modem built into it, the data service activated on your cellular plan, and a cable made for your phone to connect to a laptop/hondata (usually can get those in serial). It would be really hard to make a cable that had to plug into the cel phone.

But all in all, as it does seem possible, I think you will find it more trouble then its worth. It looks good on paper, but I dont see the praticality of doing real time data logging from so far away from the car, if you aren't road racing.

Interesting...don't think that it's NHRA legal though...or at least that's what I believe I read the last time I was reading the rule book(2 weeks ago)

hey austin, only thing I saw was no traction control system, datalogging is allowed as far as I can tell.

Datalogging is legal, however the transmission of any information from the car to an outside source is not legal...it's in there somewhere, as I read the entire book...but I gave it to a local racer friend that wanted to make their car NHRA legal.

Maybe I misinterperated the rules...but here you go...I found it for you.

9:2 DATA RECORDERS
"Transmission or display of data gathered or processed by
data recorder to the driver or any remote location prohibited. Data
may be reviewed (printout, replay, etc.) only after the run.

Discovery of a device that displays, indicates, or transmits "on
track," "track location," or "elapsed time"-type data will be grounds
for immediate disqualification from the event, loss of all NHRA
Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series points for the season
and suspension from all NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag
Racing events for the remainder of the season. Additional penalties
may be imposed at the discretion of NHRA.

Greg,
Speak to Ralphie, he was just discussing this subject last night.

To sum up his conversation, he said that the NHRA outlawed it.
