torque n.
The moment of a force; the measure of a force's tendency to produce torsion and rotation about an axis, equal to the vector product of the radius vector from the axis of rotation to the point of application of the force and the force vector.
A turning or twisting force.

Basically in other word for speed... It will get you off the line quicker. Like a Mustang or a Vett or SS Camaro. Like a Heavy Duty Truck Needs usually has more TQ than HP for heavy loads of crap that it's designed for. Honda's don't have torque at all
very minimal compared to america cars. That's why Honda's have VTEC!

Ok, here's the physics explination:
Torque is force times distance (T=F*d). One pound of force applied to the end of a one foot long lever gives one ft-lb of torque. In your engine, the rod applies force to the crankshaft, which acts as a lever, giving torque.
Horsepower is actually a fundamentally different measurement than torque. Think of it as telling you how much torque you can deliver in one minute. This is why 100lb-ft of torque makes twice as many horses at 8000rpm than 4000rpm. When the engine is spinning twice as fast, it produces twice as much torque over the course of a minute. Confused yet?
