My distributor cap melted ! ? ! ... WHY ?

My distributor cap melted ! ? ! ... WHY ?
I noticed last night the my distributor was making a wierd whinning noise . today the noise was consistant anf the car suddenly died . when i opened the hood i found a melted cap . what could have caused this . i would like to know before i replace it so that it does not happen again .
