my car is sputterin help
Hey I'm new here,
I have a 91 Civic hatchback
A couple of weeks ago I went to crank my car up and was going to put gas in it, and its started missing a little. I went to put gas in it thinking maybe its just running out of gas. Put gas in it and it cleared up. but I Drove it that weekend and it was missing and sputtering real bad.
figured it was probably time for a tune up, bought plugs, wires, button and cap and changed that.
After driving down the road a couple of miles it cleared up and it was fine.
The following weekend I drove it to work SAT & SUN
That Sunday afternoon, I was at my uncles house for a couple of hours, left there and headed back home, about 5 miles down the road. sitting at a intersection (stoplight)
It was in gear. Went to take off and It would barely make it across the intersection, Sputtering and missing. Was afraid to go to 2nd thought it would cut off on me. I just gave it more gas and slowly cleared up.... was trying to hurry up and make it home... about 2 miles from there I was going 50 mph and the rpm's just all of a sudden dropped to 25. It wouldn't go anywhere. Then the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on
Got home finally, check to see what code it was throwing. It was fuel injector.
the other night took injectors out of mine and put it them in a 89 hatch. That car ran better than mine did.
Last night, checked the dizzy, took the dizzy off the 89 and put it on mine, and my car was still acting the same!
also while doing that, gave it some gas to try to see if it would clear up and my back yard was full of smoke from my car and it stunk so bad ( smelled like gas and oil)
NEED HELP PLEASE... I WANT MY CAR BACK ON THE ROAD
checked so far:
dizzy- is fine

Fuel pump or PGM-FI Main Relay, [fuel injector power relay is in the PGM-FI Main Relay along with fuel pump power relay].
The PGM-FI Main Relay is a common problem on older Honda/Acura. 94

Although it may not be the problem, dismising it is not good troubleshooting and although replacing it can't hurt it is an expensive way to troubleshoot a problem.
I do agree a compression test should be done. 94

i agree with trying the compreion test if not that id have to say fuel pump if u often run ur car low on gas it will take it out faster......however i had a 92 accord once that did the same thing ur talkin about and i just drove it till it stopped working all together and it turned out that it was my altinator just not putting out enough juice and it made the car spit and sputter and throw out smoke

Well I usually don't run it low on gas, I usually fill it up and ONLY drive it on the weekends to work. OK from my house to home is about 5 miles. So it gets drove a total of 20 miles a WEEK. It will run to about 400 miles till i need to fill up again.
Its not my daily driver anymore, I have a 92 Accord that i drive during the week and the hatch sits during the week.
(lol its prolly mad at me and just won't run cause i don't drive her anymore)
I wouldn't think an alternator would make a car spit/sputter and smoke .....
Have had alternator problems before, and it wasn't giving it enough juice to crank it.....never exp the spit/sputter thing......?

well i think we figured out but have not been able to crank it today to see if it fixed it or not (due to working).
But we had a friend that had the same model car as mine and had the same problems and come to find out it was his Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator. He had gas in his engine. He changed that and the oil and afterwards his engine started knocking.
There was gas in my engine you could smell it when you pulled the dipstick out, hopefully my engine is ok!
Changed mine and the oil but like I said have not been able to crank it today to see if its fixed but hopefully will here in the next few days.

how is there gas in your engine or mixed with your oil? thats kind of impossible..i think you just flooded your motor with too much gas while trying to start it. if i were you i would take out the spark plugs and let them set out for awhile so that all the unburned gas sitting on your pistons would evaporate out. i think thats why your smelling gas, its not mixed within your oil if it is which i've never heard of before then...time for rebuild
