Default MSD problem

ok I got an MSD digital 6, SS coil, and modfied cap for my 98 Integra GSR installed. Now the problem is the car's tach doesn't operate past 3500 rpm and idles rough. Now if I install that white resistor (sp?) that came with the coil the tach works fine. Why is that?? The instructions say that the new cars don't require this to operate. I asked the tech at MSD if I needed the Tach/Fuel adapter for my car and he said that I didn't require anything other then what I have and that I didn't need to use that white resistor either. So what gives.
Please help soon because my car is going to the dyno on Sat. and I just got a few more things to do.
Thanks everybody..
