Is micropolishing considered a necessary step prior to reassembling the bottom end? I'm installing new bearings, if that makes a difference. Should I look for some kind of indication on the journals that they need to be polished.
It's absolutely necessary if there are any marks on the journals of the crank. You want the surface of the journals to be perfect. Usually a visual inspection will tell you if you need to polish it or not. I always polish mine just to be sure. Hell... If you could get your crank to me, I'd polish it up for $20.
Micropolishing the journals does a lot more than just putting them back to their stock specs, it goes beyond that. The smoother that you can get the journals, the easier that the bearings will slide along the surface. On any well built bottom end, having the micropolishing done or not can make a HUGE difference on how fast your motor goes through rod and crank bearings.

The journals look good, but better safe than sorry I guess, especially if the price is that low. Thanks for the input.
I'll get a price from my local machine shop to polish, but let me know where you're at BabyDaddy. If you're local to NYC and I can just drop it off, I'm definitely interested.
