Default Maximum TOWING

Whats the most you have ever towed with your Honda?

I'm just curious because I've done most of my towing with dangerous and stupid towing ropes/chains.

Things I've done with a Honda....

1988 Prelude Si 5speed pulled out a 1992 Towncar out of a ditch, I hooked it onto the front of the prelude and reversed it, took a few trys to work it out and got it out without burning the clutch badly or killing tires.

1986 CRX DX - Stock ew1 carbed dynoed @ 54whp 5speed - pulled a 1986 Toyota Corolla hatchback (ae86) 34 miles first, 25 miles second time, 15 miles 3rd time.

1988 Civic DX 4door - stock d15b2 5 speed- pulled the ae86, 1992 subaru legacy, 1992 mitsubishi eclipse, 1984 celica, pull started at least 20 atv's, 1986 Nissan maxima (heavyest car I ever pulled and it was pulled 34 miles, civic cruised fine at 65-70mph 4th gear pull) . The car had 230k+ original miles and had clicking axels ever since I bought it and during all of the tows and STILL runs and drives perfect today with over 260K miles.

I just recently sold my project tow truck i gave up on... 1986 Dodge D150 360V8/automatic longbed. The guy that bought it shocked me...... he came with a 1997 dx coupe 5 speed with 3 people!!!! The truck needed a tow home and I thought wtf.... HE DID IT , he hooked up the civic and its stock d series non vtec pulled it no problems 30 miles to his house. Please note the truck had a load of crap in the back (tree branches and misc) and all of the tires were low on air. I can't believe it to this day.

So now I've decided to make my own tow rig Honda LOL. I droped the D series setup due to the lack of brute torque off the line and optional axels. I have 200whp rated axels, B18 with port and polish job, skunk2 intake manifold,CAI,cam gears, ported TB, fluidine radiator, removed power steering and a/c, DC sports header, centerforce stg 1 clutch, short throw shifter, ss brake lines, hawk pads with slotted rotors (all 4 wheels), dual spring rear hybrid setup (two pairs of rear springs coiled together and tack welded to stay together), rear agx adjustable shock and tokiko blues in the front. full custom class II grade hitch fully built rear bumper into a hitch that comes threw the plastic bumper cover 2'' reciever.

I get about 32-35mpg @ 60mph no load and about 23-24mpg consistantly with a tow dolly and my 2400lb toyota. My MPG owns all of the trucks out there, I have gone against a 1994 silverado single cab 350 V8 and in acceleration he gets me barly and in braking i stop about 20 ft further. I think if I had more traction off the line I could get him, and if I had a bigger brake kit I could take him at the braking. I think I will keep my current brake setup and consiter a electric brake kit for the tow dolly but the diffrence between chevy and my integra is not much with my mods. I'm consitering a YS1 transmission with lsd for the better towing gear ratios. I think my B18 will max out around 4,000lbs.

(these comparasins are with simular cars, the integra was pulling a 85 celica and the chevy had a 89 toyota truck 2wd swb)

anyone else have any towing experiences?

I'm debating on installing a OEM style hitch , my current one is welded/bolted to the rear bumper, the most I've pulled so far is 3200lb buick regal on a tandem trailer w/surge brakes. It had a little bit more stuggle this time due to the galvenized trailer weighing alot, I never got below 55mph though.

Will a 92-93 Hitch bolt to a 90-91 DB bumper? Or will I have to swap bumpers?

You have to understand basic phyisics. If your car is all stock and you don't know how to slip the clutch and use the throttle all you will do is spin tires! If your just pushing you should try in Reverse, going up hill in reverse will yeild you maximum traction.

You can make good torque with a B20, forged h beam rods, eagle forged pistons..... and slightly bigger cams, and a small turbo. Its simple really when you think about it. Aftermarket companies are all over Honda's. The only thing we are lacking is a stronger tranny, but my stock DB LS tranny hasn't had any problems so far.

Stronger clutches
Stronger brakes
Stronger axels
More HP
Stiffer frame
Stronger springs
Lower Ratio Diffrential/Transmissions
LSD's

All of those things used for "Tuning" actually helps when it comes to towing. I believe the Honda frame is alot stronger than people think. No you can't expect it to stay straight with 1000whp heavy v8 in the front, but pulling weight is a diffrent story. I can't wait to find a good YS1 to overhaul and install.

I'm going to attempt my largest pull so far, a 1998 Toyota 4 Runner V6 4X4, lets all hope it goes well!

^^^That vid is funny lol

I've pulled an ef hatch, turbo'd ek twice, a 4 door teg, and I think another honda I can't really remember. I've always used a tow strap and rode the brakes in the trailing car. My wife will drive the 4 door, very well I might add. I've got a mostly stock ls with a lightweight flywheel and act xtream plate/street disc mated to an si tranny. With the low gearing of that tranny, we seem to accellerate very well. Had it around 60 before no problems, but that is kinda scary with a tow strap

A few things you might to to help tow-ability is use the best rear brake setup you can along with a 4040 prop valve and 1" master. Hell, for that matter, use the 4040 with drum brakes and keep them adjusted up really well and you could probably get better braking that way. Of course if you have a decent load on the hitch, stiffer springs in rear and some really nice struts since bouncing might prove problematic.

BTW, i guess towing with your honda is a texas thing
