Default Max engine tilt angle.

I have been throwing around some ideas of a future build. I remember seeing engine mounts that put a d or b series at a crazy tilt angle like 19-24 degrees. What is the maximum angle before you start having oiling issues? Are there any other issues that could arise? Not including fabrication. Thanks in advanced.

In my mind these are the primary concerns for extreme mounting angles:

1) oil pan/sump and pickup supply. modified or custom oil pan and pick up should take care of this.
2) oil trough for the cam and drain back. the cam has a bit of a trough or channel under it that holds a bit of oil. this helps with splash lubrication of the valve train. the more the motor is tilted, the less oil volume this holds. and engine on a stand could be used to check how far is too far and maybe test designs for a baffle system. drain back would need consideration here as well. also oil spilling out without the valve cover on may suggest pooling at the valve cover gasket area when installed... something else to consider.
3) bleeding of air from coolant. not sure the best method for testing this... but the coolant system was designed so that air bubbles congregate in a certain area so they can be removed. at significantly different angles this may not be possible so other provisions would need to be made.

Hondamark, Thank you for your reply.

1) I haven’t decided on what series engine I’m going to use. Possibly a D series for weight. For the pick up and pan I was already of thinking of modifying the pan or build a dry sump system. I want to keep the center of gravity as possible.

2) I like your idea of testing it on a stand and looking for pooling in the head. I can fab up a valve cover to see how the oil will splash while running. I have built a few for v8 to adjust the valve lashing why they were running.

3)I didn’t even think of the cooling system I will have to look into a way see where the air gets trapped in the system. Once I fab up the splash cover, I’ll run the engine on the stand and watch the coolant temp to see if there is any variations at idle. Maybe use a clear return hose to the radiator and see if I’m getting excessive bubble in the system also.
