Default making own catback

My friend and I are thinking of making our own catback exhaust system for his nissan 200sx. The idea is to get piping from autozone and weld them together to make a custom and cheap catback...

is this a good idea or should he just get a aftermarket system?

do you have a mig welder? do you have welding experience?

if you know what you're doing then you don't need us to tell you do go ahead and do it. DO IT!

Make sure to get some kind of resonator or it will sound poopy . . . .

Also check out jegs for pretty inexpensive piping & mandrel bends. They also sell bends with swaged ends so you theoretically wouldn't even need to weld . . . just slip fit things together & use some good pipe clamps.

I have some welding experince and yes i have a mig welder so im thinking we can pull it off my question is what would there be a huge difference between crush and mandrel bends..

the pipes we are looking at have the ends like your talking about we were just going to fit them together and the weld all the way around to make sure we have no leaks. As far as the bends go i think there's only going to be like 2 90 degree bends that we can probably make two 45's and just use the crush bent on those to save time and money.

Get the mandrel bends, as the crushed bends reduce the i/d too much.

If you're hard-set on staying below $75, I doubt you're gonna fit mandrel bends & a resonator in . . . And frankly, it's not going to sound good or perform well.

Personally, I think spending the $75 on a high quality Magnaflow resonator is an EXTREMELY worthwhile investment.

For my (theoretical) custom exhaust, I was figuring spending about $200 (sans labor) . . . . that's w/ all aluminized piping & magnaflow components. Plus another $100 for a resonated Carsound cat & $50 for an extra moroso spiralflow resonator (if needed).

I'll talk to nathan and see if the budget will allow for some mandrel bends and a high flow cat and resonator but I'm pretty sure if its much over 100 bux he will just buy a aftermarket catback

well the update is we went searching for piping last night and put it all together in the store to see what we were working with and we have decided to do it all custom and run new hangers and all it will now only have 2 45's instead of 3 90's and 2 45's so we are taking 3 bends out and running under the solid rear axle

oh yea this is just to keep us busy until he orders an after market system
